Nutmeg pups are bright orange and to the untrained eye can look like and be mistaken for a Dark eyed Honey "DEH". The only difference is "there is NO white belly"
Nutmegs have a yellow undercoat because of the ee, but tipping or bands of the hair are black because of the aa. Pups usually start molting by 10weeks old. It takes only a few days to a week for a Nutmeg to molt all but the top of it's head. I call it a soul spot :) It looks like a little halo but to some it looks like a taupe LOL.
Nutmegs like ANY gerbil will molt it's whole life. It is very visible in the Nutmeg compared to other gerbils. Often when placing gerbils I like to show new adopters the Nutmegs and how they are ever changing. I absolutely love Nutmegs. I love how they molt as a pup and how they changing as adults. They are like a kaleidoscope. Each time they molt they have a new pattern.

Here, I will show some Nutmeg pictures, how some molt, and the recessives behind it.
Dark Eyed Honey is an "A"-Agouti white belly "ee" gerbil. The Nutmeg is the black "ee" Self Belly gerbil. The Honey Cream is said to be a pied spotting but Ibeg to differ as I not only get the spine stripe marking known as HC but I also get normal spot, Pied, and what I call a True Mottle like any other mottle color. THEN! There is the cream marking...
For a long time breeders thought that only DEH gerbils could be Honey Cream "HC"
But with some reserch I found that ALL the "ee" gerbils tend to come in this marking.
Here is a straight litter of Nutmeg "aa" gerbils bred from two spotted parents.
