German and Dutch: nickname for a man with gray or white hair
Once called the orange Siamese because it retains the point markings on it's ears, nose, tail and feet. The color is still extremely rare both in the UK and in the US.
young Schimmel animals look like Yellow Foxes, but when the animal gets 8-10 weeks old the color changes. The fur on the body starts to lighten, like it moulds. A spot on the head turns white a bit later. The fur near the skin stays yellow colored, and the tail stays orange. The animals have dark skin at their noses, ears and genitals, and they have black eyes (although there is a red eyed variant which does not have the dark skin at the extremities). The nails are very light horn colored.
Science Direct notes this as an Recessive Yellow.
Light CP Schimmels is a BEW gerbil with genetics of aa chch efef Gg P
A Silver Point Schimmels genotype is ** ** efef gg P. - Many confuse the Silver Schimmel and the Lt. CP Schimmel.. It can be pretty easy to identified though, if no CP pups are born then it is not a CP Schim "BEW"
Silver Schimmels also tend to be lightly frosted with silver ticking just like the Schimmel is frosted with orange ticking. A BEW will be as the name. A white gerbil with Black eyes.
A RE Silver Schimmel will look like a REW. The only wat to truly know if it is a RESS is to either know the pedigree background or if bred to a Schimmel.
There is really no difference between an A schimmel and an a Schimmel. The slight difference is that an a gerbil may hold the points a little bolder, yet that isn't always the case. selective breeding can do it too. All young schimmels have a faded star on their heads before they molt. There is no difference between A & a

Research 2008 Litter
I've searched the web for Schimmels. Not much documentation and breeders results. where found about their mutation. In 2008 I started setting up breeders and have tried to selectively find unrelated Schimmels to my kennel. It is VERY hard to find Schimmels. Now as of Oct 2008 I've decided to selectively breed my schimmels into other line's "Selecting ONLY certain colors to keep proper points of the Schimmel bright and true"
The litter below is a first true "MANY COLOR" Schimmel combo that will allow me to document in my kennel. I, at this time have three line's going for the StoryBook Schimmels.
- Kota Clan
- Orac Clan
- Ice Clan
It will be MANY more generations before I am happy with results as far as color, type or show.
**** StoryBooks pretty much has closed their doors to adopting out their Schimmels. Only a very few maybe adopted out as pets.
This pup above could either be a Spotted Red eyed Schimmel, or a Spotted Red eyed Silver Schimmel? She is a pinkish white and you can see her starting to fade to white. This makes me belive she is a RES as a spt. RESS would look much like a REW " very hard to take photo's off and also to get the spot on her tail tip"
These pup pictures are all of the pups in the bowl above. I've taken pictures of them as they grow.
Parents genetics would be:
Mom- RES- *a C* efef *g pp - Kota Clan
Dad- HC - A* C* eef Gg Pp Sp - Orac Clan
Calculation says:
Schimmel
RE Schimmel
Silver Schimmel - BEW
Champagne
Yellow Fox
Dark eyed Honey
Unknown - ** C* *ef g*
Undefied color - ** ** ** "g" **
***I'm not sure if an Unknown/defied pup can survive. This is the real first time I've focused on ALL schimmel colors -2008-
**Note the dot on the Schimmels head... Most regular schimmels have this spot before they molt
